Watching the sunset over Erg Chebbi

How to reach a high dune at the right moment and get the best photos.

Sunset is the most famous moment in Erg Chebbi: the dunes turn from gold to deep orange in a few minutes. Here is how to make the most of it.

Arrive before the sun goes down

The best light starts before sunset. We plan the ride so you reach a high dune with time to spare, then walk up the last part to the top.

Which ride to choose

A 2-hour quad ride that finishes at sunset is the classic choice. A buggy works too if you want to share the ride with someone. On a camel the pace is slower and calmer.

Photos

Shoot towards the sun for silhouettes on the crest, or away from it for the strongest orange colour on the sand. Your guide stops whenever you want a picture.

After sunset

It gets dark quickly in the desert and the air cools down. Bring a warm layer, especially from November to March.

See you on the dunes
